The I-185 (M-71) in the garage.

The I-185 (M-71) is a Rank IV Soviet fighter with a battle rating of 4.7 (AB/SB) and 5.0 (RB). It was introduced in Update 1.41.

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The I-185 (M-71) is a dedicated Boom and Zoom fighter for its battle rating and needs to always keep its energy levels at a good level to hunt down players.

Vehicle characteristics

The I-185 (M-71) is a monoplane with a Shvetsov M-71 engine, the plane is fitted with 3 20 mm ShVAK cannons mounted at the fuselage of the I-185. The left cannon has 140 rounds, right cannon 170 rounds, and the top cannon 250 rounds. The fuel tanks of the I-185 are self-sealing and located in the fuselage and in the wings.

Tactics

Before spawning, load in 30 minutes of fuel and Ground Targets or Stealth shells. 30 minutes of fuel is for Realistic Battles and the Ground Target/Stealth shells for setting fire of fuel tanks and wing clipping.

The I-185 (M-71) is an energy fighter, so it needs to climb to at least 4-6 km high (16,404~ ft), it is preferable to side climb as to not get interrupted. Once proceeded at a desired altitude, do not dive or attack first, wait for enemy planes to dive, then dive after them while they're trying to climb.

Never turn fight in the I-185 (M-71), try not to head on enemy aircraft if you know they have wing mounted guns. If ever, try to aim at the engine of the attacking plane to disable them.

Specific enemies worth noting

USA

You will mostly encounter the P-47, the P-51D series, and the F-82E. The best way to destroy these fighters is to bait into them wasting their energy so they could not turn/climb as well.

Germany

Same as the USA, make the German plane waste energy and destroy while they're trying to climb again.

Great Britain

British planes are a stretch to destroy, they need to spend their energy by diving, but they sometimes have good energy retention, or turn fight, but it can turn like a biplane once it has low energy.Try to counter their flying style and destroy them.

Japan

Japanese planes have a thing in common with each other as its goal is to have the lightest aircraft in order to turn fight and in turn they have poor armor so aim carefully at fuel tanks to set them aflame.

Counter-tactics

The I-185 (M-71) starts to show its weakness once it tries to turn fight, once it does so, shoot them on the spot while they're trying to turn. The I-185 sometimes will be found at a lower altitude than you, so wait until they dive and try to climb again and destroy it.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Once engine injection upgrade has been purchased, the plane has a brutal climb rate (30 m/s)
  • 3x 20mm cannons have decent amounts of ammo and have good damage output (note, central cannon has more ammo than the side cannons)
  • Great roll rate
  • Maneuverable
  • Has ordnance, making the aircraft viable for CAS in Ground RB
  • OBSCENE acceleration once spaded

Cons:

  • Not a turn fighter
  • Top speed is nothing special when compared to most USA aircraft, but is still decent
  • Combat flaps in 1.79 break when above 380kph(230mph), as opposed to the 1.77's 494kph(307mph) (All values in IAS)
