The H8K2 in the garage.

The H8K2 is a Rank I Japanese Bomber with a battle rating of 3.3 (AB/RB), and 3.7 (SB). It was introduced in Update 1.57 "Battle March".

General play style

Tactics

With any bomber, if you're caught alone, you're as good as dead. However, the H8K2 has the rare exception of 5 20mms. Use this as your advantage. In realistic battles, frequently you will be put against enemy ships on maps like New Guinea and Saipan, and so naturally you should attack the ships. Note: If you try to attack the carriers or bomb targets with bombs, you will be frequently dived on by enemy fighters, like spits, F4Us, and other fighters.

However, if only one aircraft attacks you, you have an extremely high chance of destroying the target. The H8K2 will withstand a large amount of hits compared to other Japanese bombers, and so this plane can easily tank the hits your adversaries can pull up, that being 12.7mm bullets, and even the P-51's 20mm hispanos (to a certain degree). This will either provoke the attacker to tail you, in which they are much faster than you and will fly closer, allowing you to hit your 20mm cannons dead center, or attempt another attack from above, in which you can quickly engage the enemy with your dorsal 360 degree 20mm cannon. If your 20mm tail cannon runs out of bullets, remember you have your top cannon! Use your elevators to fly upwards and engage them with your 360 degree 20mm cannon, which will both significantly increase the chance of destroying the target, and increasing the chance of survival.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Better bomb load than the H6K.
  • Quite fast for a plane it's size, opponents such as F2As, He112s and Bf110s, all not uncommon in AB, won't catch up too easily.
  • Dorsal turret is reasonably effective in covering the sides, as well as both nose and tail.
  • Nose gunner can be used for offensive maneuvers.
  • Quite durable for a Japanese plane.
  • A total of of five 20mms for a rank 1 bomber.
  • Very low RP requirement for modules.

Cons:

  • Big target.
  • Cannon gunners do not efficiently cover the whole belly.
  • Carries a lot of fuel.
  • Bomb load is still outclassed by other contemporary bombers.
  • High research cost for a Rank I.
  • All payload options are mounted externally.
  • Stock payload option is torpedoes
