General info

The H6K4 in the garage.

The H6K4 is a Rank I Japanese flying boat with a battle rating of 2.0 (AB/RB) and 2.3 (SB). It was in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.29.

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

Vehicle characteristics

As the plane's statistics suggests, the H6K4 is a slow, cumbersome beast. Keeping your altitude high and bombing enemy bases with your huge 800 kg bombs may save the battle for your team. There is absolutely no sense in flying low as you'll find every enemy fighter on your tail in no time. The plane is like a sponge - while it has zero armour, it can resist ridiculous amount of hits. Fly high, bomb the opposing team's bases and as soon as you sense danger (presumably an enemy fighter) switch to gunners view and try shooting him down as soon as possible. You'll have no chance shaking fighters down due to your low mobility and top speed. Your gunners have no protection and if they are knocked out, dying is a real pain in this plane. Inexperienced, players may try ramming you... which may end fatal for them but not for you. The H6K4 is highly flammable, as your fuel tanks are not self sealing and are in the wings. This makes them big targets for enemy rounds so once they're hit they have a very high chance of catching fire. It is advisable to try not fly in straight line when an enemy comes after you.

All payload is located under the wing on pylons. A big wingspan makes accurate bombing against sturdy units (e.g. light pillbox) difficult. Furthermore the bombs are dropped in pairs (note: not Torpedoes), limiting the quantity of total drops but partially offsetting the aforementioned accuracy problems.

A big downside is the lack of belly defence. Albeit the tail turret has a good gun depression of about ~35° this weakspot can still be abused.

For a pleasant surprise, the speed performance is good despite its size. Climb-rate is decent for its tier. However the manoeuvrability is poor compared to other flying boats of its tier.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Huge bomb load.
  • Can withstand extensive amount of hits.
  • Resists ramming from smaller planes.
  • Extremely dangerous rear 20mm gun for light fighters, and many inexperienced players will always tail you.
  • Decent self-defense firepower.
  • Multiple engines.
  • Great defensive coverage for the plane, only lacking the ventral area.
  • Rugged design allows for better survivability.
  • Has an assortment of munitions that can be carried ranging from armour piercing bombs to torpedoes.

Cons:

  • Payload drop is slightly inaccurate due wing pylons.
  • Very low maneuverability.
  • Preferred target due to size & mobility.
  • Gunners get knocked out very easily.
  • Can only land safely on water, it can land on land but it is at a disadvantage of massive damage to the fuselage and the possibility of the tail ripping off.
  • The belly of the plane has no defensive turrets, many experienced players will take note.
  • Extremely flammable. A short, well placed burst on the fuel tanks can cause it to catch fire.
  • Has 4 gunners by default, which will heavily penalize their effectiveness for new players that have invested large amounts of crew skill points into experienced gunners.
