The D.501 is a Rank I French fighter with a battle rating of 1.3. It was introduced in Update 1.73 "Vive la France".

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The D.501 is a French fighter which can be utilized for air-to-air combat or ground attack on light ground units (armoured vehicles and mobile AAA units). Good speed and manouverability allows this aircraft to utilize its rudder, ailerons and flaps to roll, turn and manouver out of tight spots. When going after ground units this aircraft can making an attack and then looping up and back over down onto remaining targets with ease. The 20 mm cannon adds an extra punch which many early aircraft do not have and can be used successfully on other aircraft to include larger bombers.

Vehicle characteristics

The D.501 is an all metal mono-wing aircraft with an open cockpit and fixed landing gear which was built in the mid 1930’s and was France’s fighter aircraft until it was replaced by Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 aircraft in 1939. When playing SB (or AB and RB in cockpit view) this aircraft offers excellent visibility only really limiting visibility where the wings are at. This aircraft has 600 rounds of ammunition between two machine guns and 60 rounds of 20 mm ammunition. This aircraft can really do some damage when gun convergence is set between 250 and 350 meters.

Tactics

The extremely limited 20mm ammo supply should be guarded carefully and used only for heavier and larger targets where the destructive power of the HEF shells can make quick work of enemies. Most other fighters of the period will fall quickly enough to the 7.5mm MAC rounds. Like most other low-tier fighters, the D.501 is exceptionally agile, able to turn well inside aircraft even a single BR higher. Combined with the powerful 20 mm Hispano cannon, the D.501 can be a serious threat to aircraft well above its normal rank.

Specific enemies worth noting

Smaller and lighter aircraft such as biplanes will have an easier time evading you and turning the tables by getting behind you. The D.501 can utilize its speed and manoueverability to make it very difficult for and enemy fighter to get a gun solution.

Counter-tactics

Biplanes can typically out turn a D.501, however be careful, if a D.501 utilizes their rudder in their loop/turn, they can cut a tighter circle. The D.501 open cockpit can allow for a pilot snipe, but other wise most of the critical equipment for a D.501 are located towards the middle of the fuselage forward including the pilot, fuel tank and engine.

  • Agile and effective when turning and looping especially when utilizing the rudder

  • Open cockpit (pilot sniping)
  • Critical components clustered towards front of aircraft
