General info

The D.373 in the garage.

The D.373 is a reserve French fighter with a battle rating of 1.0. It was introduced in Update 1.73 "Vive la France". The D.373 is the navalised version of the D.371, but otherwise is essentially the same aircraft.

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

Like many reserve aircraft, the Dewoitine 373 is a good aircraft for new pilots to start with. Due to the speed of the D.373 it can perform in several roles which include turn fighter, energy fighter or boom & zoom fighting. While long shots are possible with the guns on this aircraft, it is best to wait until you are within 300 m. For close up shooting, gun convergence should be set between 200 – 300 m for concentrated fire of all four machine guns. For SB players, this aircraft’s high-wing will limit some of your forward and upward visibility, creating a blind spot where enemies can attack from. One advantage of a high-wing aircraft though, visibility looking down is virtually unobstructed (except for the fuselage) which allows you to fly around and scan below you for targets.

Vehicle characteristics

The D.373 is a high-wing monoplane with an air cooled radial engine. During level flight with power cut to 0% and using full up elevator, the D.373 will maintain approximately 92 km/h (57 mph) and only lose about 0.3 m (1 ft) of altitude every 2-3 seconds and will not stall. When power is cut while the D.373 is in a climb vertical climb, the plane will stall at approximately 72.4 km/h (45 mph). The D.373 has excellent energy retention and can be used as a turn fighter, energy fighter or for boom & zoom fighting. This plane is very agile for a mono-wing plane.

Tactics

Maintaining speed with this aircraft is a must as a slow D.373 is an easy target. Initial spawning into a map should lead a D.373 pilot to climb and gain altitude. This will give you an advantage over most other pilots upon reaching the combat area as you will select which enemy plane to dive on and attack. With a diving attack, you will gain speed which will allow you to quickly gain on the enemy aircraft fire off a burst of rounds and then climb back up for altitude. If you decide to tail an enemy plane after a dive, you will risk bleeding off your energy. When attacking an enemy plane, attempt to attack when you see the greatest surface area of the fuselage and wings. If tailing a fighter, wait for them to turn or pull-up to expose the most surface area. When turn fighting or looping, utilize your rudder to sharpen your turning ability.

Specific enemies worth noting

Early Russian I-15 and I-16 aircraft are extremely maneouverable and fairly fast and can be difficult to evade or line up in your gun sights. Early Japanese biplanes are very light weight which enable them to be extremely aggressive when it comes to turn fighting.

Counter-tactics

All of the major components of the D.373 are clustered towards the front of the aircraft. Aiming from the pilot cockpit to the engine should enable you to hit a critical component of the aircraft, be it the pilot, fuel tank, wings or the engine. Try to pull this aircraft into an extended turn battle as it will bleed off it’s airspeed making it slow and vulnerable.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Great roll rate
  • Good climb rate for a rank I fighter
  • One of the fastest reserve aircraft there is, but slower than the Ba.65 (K.14) L, an Italian attacker
  • Very nimble
  • One of 7 reserve aircraft that has 4 guns
  • A smaller target than most biplanes
  • Naval version, arrestor hook can be used on carriers.

Cons:

  • Most rivals are faster at this point
  • Not the best turner
  • Machine guns have a low fire rate compared to Russian ShKas
  • low ammunition compared to other aircraft such as the I-15
