Germany has been one of the main proponents of modern warfare concepts. Their military doctrine, known today as Blitzkrieg (Lighting War), has set a precedence for all countries to model their doctrines after. The Germans emphasized heavy-hitting, well armoured vehicles, which is an easily identifiable trait on their late-war vehicles. It is important to note the German tank fighting style favoured long-range engagements, owing to their extensive combat experience, hard learned on the wide open Eastern Front in World War II. German armoured vehicles were introduced into War Thunder with Update 1.41 at the same time Ground Forces was ushered into the game.

Class Specifics

Germany Light Tanks are relatively on-par with other nations of their respective ranks, boasting good armour (for a light tank) and decent speed while retaining a solid punch. Their early vehicles like the Panzer II series distinguish themselves from other vehicles in the rank, because are the only ones to possess automatic cannons as their main armament, save for the T-60. The final German light tank, the Begleitpanzer 57 is more of a dedicated tank hunter rather than a light tank, due to its significant increase in lethality resulting from its TOW missile/57 mm auto-cannon configuration combined with its 78 km/h speed. Germans lack other light tanks starting from ranks II-V, save for premium vehicles.

Germany Medium Tanks combine excellent firepower, armour, and mobility in sleek designs like the Panther series. Other vehicles of this branch, like the renowned Panzer III series and Panzer IV series may lack in armour, but make up for this deficiency with a hard-hitting, high RoF cannon. Players of this branch will be amazed at the ability of German vehicles to deliver damage to the enemy in short order. The vehicles, the Leopard series at the V rank is a departure from the latter vehicles, namely sacrificing armour for mobility and speed while still retaining the powerful cannon. The final vehicle for this branch, the KPz-70 combines all the virtues of protection, mobility, and firepower, making it the distant cousin of the legendary Leopard 2. The KPz-70 is a reward to determined players of the German tree, as it is the hallmark of German tank design in the late stages of the Cold War, built from the lessons of the past.

Germany Heavy Tanks are feared historically, either having earth-shaking dimensions like the Maus or possessing thick armour and an excellent cannon like the Tiger. Players of this branch will start to notice a trend, with the vehicles getting significantly heavier, slower, but also receiving excellent guns and armour at the same time. German heavy tanks are a thorn to the enemy team, due to their errant traits, and players who utilise these vehicles to their fullest extent can change the outcome of a match. That said, it is unwise to reveal the weaknesses of these vehicles, like their lack of mobility. Long-range engagements are the trump card for German heavies, as mobility isn't an issue in those types of fights. The final vehicle of this branch, the Pz.Kpfw. VIII "Maus" will grant players with the heaviest armoured vehicle ever built to play with, bringing the German heavy line to a satisfying conclusion.

Germany Tank Destroyers truly embody what tank destroyers are, simply to destroy other tanks. The excellent cannons offered by this branch will leave no opponent knocked-out, as the guns both pack excellent penetration and damage characteristics. This, combined with excellent armour enables players to lock-down entire sectors if needed without fear of destruction. The later vehicles of this branch, like the Ferdinand and Jagdtiger are excellent examples of this practice, packing a death-dealing cannon while combining near-impenetrable armour. Tank destroyers like the Dicker Max and Sturer Emil lack any form of armour, but still carry excellent guns capable of dealing with any opponent at any range. The final vehicles of this branch are the Kanonenjagdpanzer and Raketenjagdpanzer series tank destroyers. These vehicles combine excellent mobility with massive damage potential.

Germany Anti-Aircraft Vehicles are always armed with cannons. They have very potent belts that can be used to counter tanks in certain situations, although AP belts shouldn't be relied upon, and tanks should still only be engaged as a last resort. Most of them are built on other tank chassis allowing them to be fast and have a good amount of armour. The excellent hull armour (for an SPAA), incredible rate of fire, and reasonable mobility makes German SPAA lethal to any aircraft that gets close. Two of the most famous and most fun German SPAAs are the Wirbelwind and the Ostwind, the first with 4x 20 mm cannons that pump out 32 shells per second, and the second with a heavy-hitting 37 mm cannon that fires almost continuously and comfortably downs even the most durable of aircraft.
