General info

Aufklärungspanzer 38(t) in the garage.

The Aufklärungspanzer 38(t) is a gift Rank I German light tank with a battle rating of 1.3. It was introduced during the Closed Beta Test for Ground Forces before Update 1.41. It is a unique light tank with an extremely large gun elevation angle.

The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations

General play style

The Aufklärungspanzer 38(t) is equipped with the same gun as the Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. F and based on the Pz.Kpfw. 38(t) Ausf. A. The gun can be used against aircraft and tanks as the high elevation allows for near 90 degree elevation. Each AP clip can reliably take out a tier 1 tank and HE can tear apart aircraft. Due to the low penetration it is best to flank your enemy unless you come across a T-26 mod.1939 or other lightly armoured vehicles. Always use surprise and firepower to overwhelm your enemy before they can return fire as it's armour lacks the reliability and strength to use.

The gun is generally accurate and can be fired continuously per magazine. Over long distance, the gun is ineffective due to loss of velocity. The HVAP-T at 10m has a penetration value of 55 mm, at longer ranges such as 500 m the value drops to 22 mm of penetration which is only effective against open vehicles. The Aufklärungspanzer 38 t also has a coaxial 7.62 MG 42 (ranging) machine gun.

Vehicle characteristics

Tactics

Based on a later Czech tank, the armour on the Sd.Kfz 140/1 is very usable. On the front, 50mm is plastered all over but if angled (which may expose the turrets weaker sides), it can almost hit 65-70mm along with workable side armour. Keeping the armour and replacing the turret and 37mm cannon with a hexagonal and heavily sloped pseudo-turret with a extremely fast firing 20mm autocannon, it loses a significant amount of weight which allows for great mobility and a smaller profile. The 20mm KwK 38 is almost the perfect gun for the 140/1s class, which fits the tank in between a light scout tank (given its English name, literally "scout car") and an SPAA. The KwK38 is more than capable of downing any plane that chooses to enter its field of fire, decimating aircraft with 10 20mm rounds in less than a second. You have a choice of three ammo types. The Sprgr. is good for light vehicles and planes, but is useless otherwise. For tanks, the PrGr. 40 has high penetration and phenomenal post penetration damage. Standard PzGr. ammo is there simply as an inexpensive midline between the two previous rounds, mixing HE and HVAP for all targets.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Main gun has a very high rate of fire. Can expel the entire 10 round magazine in less than 1 second.
  • Since the PzGr 40 shells are HVAP, the armor penetration at close range is tremendous. There is no tank at tier 1 that can reliable block the shell. Especially at close range.
  • PzGr 40 HVAP shells actually create a lot of shrapnel when successful armor penetration occurs. Spraying an enemy tank with a full magazine will cause major internal module damage and crew deaths within enemy vehicle.
  • With 50mm of frontal armor, and 30mm of turret armor, this tank can take surprisingly large beating.
  • Exceptionally fast and maneuverable tank.
  • Despite being a light tank, it has maximum gun elevation of 70°. This gives it the ability to effectively engage enemy aircraft just like a traditional SPAA can.
  • Has a MG42 for secondary gun and can be very hard hitting to enemy aircraft .

Cons:

  • High center of gravity. Can causes tipping if you take at turn to hard at high speed.
  • Once you deplete the magazine, it takes more than 6 seconds to reload a new one. Can be costly since every other anti-tank gun at the tier reloads faster than that.
  • 4° of gun depression means you have to be level or on a downward slope to fire
  • Open top turret. Vulnerable to aircraft.
  • Very weak side and rear turret armor, along with a 15mm buffer between turret and hull.
  • Recommended to stay clear of any incoming artillery barrage.

Belt types
Belts Shell composition Combat usage
Default API-T, HEFI-T
(Armor Piercing Incendiary tracer – High Explosive Fragmentation Incendiary tracer) shell
50% of this belt are useless against tanks or planes. However against other SPAA this belt can reliably take out crew, armament, ammo and engine. Having one belt in reserve does not hurt.
Sprgr. HEFI-T
(High Explosive Fragmentation Incendiary tracer) shell
Versus planes and open combat compartment vehicles. Aircraft will usually take three to six hits. Heavy armoured attackers and bombers may require more though.
PzGr API-T
(Armor Piercing Incendiary tracer) shell
Intermediate usage until the better PzGr 40 can be used. Decent enough versus light tanks and other vehicles from the rear. Due the lack of HE filler underwhelming damage, yet still better than the PzGr 40.
PzGr HVAP-T
(High Velocity Armor Piercing tracer) shell
Best penetrating shell of this vehicle. However, the damage effects are very poor. In close combat snipe for modules and crewmember for increased survival rate. Nothing is more annoying than emptying a clip and then to get killed in the reload because the enemy gunner survived. Against angled armoured it is not very effective like any other ACPR shell, this is offset by the very high base penetration though.

History of creation and combat usage

Development

The Panzer 38(t), taken from Czechoslovakia, was one of Germany's most prominent tanks in the outbreak of World War II. They were very good for the time period it was introduced in, with about 50 mm of armor in its later variant and a 37 mm cannon, it was equivalent to Germany's Panzer IIIs and was used as a supplement of that tank. While effective in the opening stages of World War II, the presence of better Allied tank armor, especially with the introduction of the Soviets T-34s in Operation Barbarossa, put the Panzer 38(t) as obsolete in protection and firepower. While the tank was relegated to second-line duties, it was determined that the chassis was to be given new life in other vehicle roles. As such, the tank chassis was adapted to fit a multitude of roles, ranging from anti-aircraft duties as the Flakpanzer 38(t), tank destroyers as the Marder III and Jagdpanzer 38(t), and as a reconnaissance vehicle as the Aufklärungspanzer 38(t)

The Vehicle

The Aufklärungspanzer 38(t) is a purpose built reconnaissance vehicle built on top of the Panzer 38(t) chassis. The vehicle is equipped with a "Hängelafette" turret, which was open-topped and mounted a 2 cm KwK 38 seen on the Panzer II along with a coaxial MG42 machine gun. These vehicles are equipped with extra radio antennas in order for the crew to effectively radio back enemy positions to headquarters. A support version was also created that mounted the 7.5 cm KwK 37 found on the early Panzer IVs, though this was less widespread than the 2 cm weaponry. Only 50 to 70 Aufklarungspanzer 38(t) with the 2 cm gun were built from late 1943 to early 1944 and only 2 Aufklarungspanzer 38(t) armed with the 75mm gun were built in 1944.
