<!--In the description, the first part needs to be about the history of the creation and combat usage of the vehicle, as well as its key features. The Colt-Browning Mk 12 Mod 3 is an advanced derivative of the 20 mm AN/M3 cannon and became the standard cannon found on US Navy aircraft from the mid-1950s. Compared to the AN/M3 it replaced, the Mk 12 boasted a faster rate of fire and higher muzzle velocity, courtesy of the new electrically-primed cartridges designed specifically for the Mk 12.

The name is a Rank rank American self-propelled anti-aircraft gun 1. It was introduced in Update 1.81 "The Valkyries".

+
|style="width: 20%" | Shell composition

+
| Combat usage
* M24A1 - Derived from the AN/M3, this cannon uses electrically primed cartridges instead of the percussively primed cartridges on all other Hispano variants. Much like the AN/M3, it's inferior in every way to the Mk 12 Mod 3.
+
|-

+
| Default || HEFI-T* / AP-T ||align="left"| These work fine, a hit on an aircraft means instant disassembly for it and still is able to hurt ground vehicles, especially if it is side into the side of a enemy tank. These seem like a good I don't know what i will run into belt.
* Hispano Mk.V - The forerunner to the AN/M3, and by extension the Mk 12. As with the two above, it has a lower muzzle velocity, lower rate of fire, and lower burst mass than the Mk 12.
+
|-

+
|40 mm AP-T || AP-T / AP-T / AP-T / HEFI-T* ||align="left"| Very powerful ammunition against ground targets with significantly more penetration than other 35-40 mm AP-T projectiles. Will easily destroy any target with side shots even outside point blank range, and can destroy lighter targets and weak spots from the front even against MBTs.
All three of the above weapons fire 20 x 110 mm Hispano ammunition, which has a higher projectile mass than the 20 x 110 mm USN used by the Mk 12, so each individual shell impact will do more damage.
+
|-

+
|M811 || HEFI-T* / HEFI-T* / HEFI-T* / AP-T ||align="left"| "Poor man's anti-air ammunition." Unlike the M822 shells these require direct hits to do damage, but if you experience problems with M822 detonating too early this belt may be your best choice.
* M39A1 & FMC T-160 - These are the US Air Force equivalent to the Mk 12. They have a higher muzzle velocity, a much higher rate of fire, and a higher burst mass. However, they have an individual projectile mass nearly 10% lower than that of the Mk 12 and rely more on the sheer number of rounds hitting the target than the size of the shell itself.
+
|-
 +
|M822 || HEFI-T* / HEFI-T* / AP-T ||align="left"| Proximity-fused shells that absolutely obliterate anything flying, when they work. Somewhat unreliable in if they detonate within range of the target, but when they do the target will be quickly torn apart. The only ammunition for self-propelled anti-aircraft guns that lets you kill planes and helicopters with near misses. Should be your go-to anti-air ammunition, if it works reliably for you.

The Mk 12 is an excellent general-purpose cannon - the high quantity of AP rounds in the Ground targets belts are ideally suited to taking out lightly armoured vehicles, and a large amount of HE-I rounds in most other belts are easily capable of destroying any opponent. However, the higher rate-of-fire and higher muzzle velocity than the AN/M3 cannons found on the aircraft before it will require some getting used to, particularly when using these cannons against moving targets. Additionally, short bursts are required with a stock cannon but are not a requirement once the New 20 mm cannons modification has been unlocked.

Pros:

Pros:
* Higher velocity ammunition means less lead is required against manoeuvring targets
+

* High rate-of-fire
+
* Twin 40mm M266 cannon (L/70 40mm Bofors) have a better rate of fire compared to the M42 Duster.
* Can fire nearly 400 rounds before jamming when upgraded
+
* The M822 ammunition is proximity fused, and will detonate if the projectile passes close enough to the target.
 +
* The 40mm's pose a serious threat to lightly-armored vehicles.
 +
* Uses the M48 Patton's hull (armor included) = one of the best-protected SPAA in the game.
 +
* Benefits in RB from aim assist thanks to the radar.

Cons:

Cons:
* As with other high rate-of-fire cannons, it will quickly deplete its ammunition stores.
+

* Limited to fairly short bursts while stock to prevent jamming
+
* As with all high-rank SPAA, very thin turret armor; a shell strike could instantly end the vehicle.
* Inaccurate while stock
+
** Turret is also vulnerable to strafing aircraft + rockets.
 +
*Armor advantages are nullified due to the inclusion of the Hull Break mechanic

Belt types

Belts Shell composition Combat usage
Default HEFI-T* / AP-T These work fine, a hit on an aircraft means instant disassembly for it and still is able to hurt ground vehicles, especially if it is side into the side of a enemy tank. These seem like a good I don't know what i will run into belt.
40 mm AP-T AP-T / AP-T / AP-T / HEFI-T* Very powerful ammunition against ground targets with significantly more penetration than other 35-40 mm AP-T projectiles. Will easily destroy any target with side shots even outside point blank range, and can destroy lighter targets and weak spots from the front even against MBTs.
M811 HEFI-T* / HEFI-T* / HEFI-T* / AP-T "Poor man's anti-air ammunition." Unlike the M822 shells these require direct hits to do damage, but if you experience problems with M822 detonating too early this belt may be your best choice.
M822 HEFI-T* / HEFI-T* / AP-T Proximity-fused shells that absolutely obliterate anything flying, when they work.

Usage in battles

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Twin 40mm M266 cannon (L/70 40mm Bofors) have a better rate of fire compared to the M42 Duster.
  • The M822 ammunition is proximity fused, and will detonate if the projectile passes close enough to the target.
  • The 40mm's pose a serious threat to lightly-armored vehicles.
  • Uses the M48 Patton's hull (armor included) = one of the best-protected SPAA in the game.
  • Benefits in RB from aim assist thanks to the radar.

Cons:

  • As with all high-rank SPAA, very thin turret armor; a shell strike could instantly end the vehicle.
    • Turret is also vulnerable to strafing aircraft + rockets.
  • Armor advantages are nullified due to the inclusion of the Hull Break mechanic

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ground vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too big, take it to a separate article, taking a link to an article about the vehicle and adding a block "/ History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article.
